I think Fall of the Samurai was half a test to see how modern they can make a game, and I think they could take it up to WWI. Trenches would seem to be a challenge, and before WWI they used, but no where near the extent of WWI. It did do infantry battles far better than Empire, and the mix melee and range was a lot of fun.
Otherwise, they work as an prologue to the period of the base game as well as an epilogue.
