has anyone tried not to develop even for a bit, field a lot of kachis and still win?

i am thinking that a huge yari ki charge will break even the most elite rifle infantry formations...

It should work given the right battlefield conditions and some skilled generalship. It will become harder to do head-on charges, even with overwhelming application of force and numbers, as "gunlines" get better with improved technology and troop quality. The Suppression Fire ability helps "gunlines" better deal with charging Samurai, so fear suppression fire once the AI has researched it. Kneel Fire will double the firepower output of "gunline" units as well since the second rank will then also be able to fire, so watch out for that too.

Hitting modernized armies in the flanks and from behind with cavalry or samurai will make a certain mess of them. A good cavalry charge in to the flanks of a unit can wipe out at least 50% of a Line Infantry unit. Head-on charges can work early on to good effect, though they may be casualty heavy at times.

what about the economics? the overall production and trade will be really bad but will it be enough to support the traditional army?

After some further playing there are some upsides and downsides. Luckily with some managing of modernisation progress you can have some modern industry to bring in some extra money, but no where near the same as the Modernists. So the Modernists can get an economic advantage, but at the same time that brings increased public unrest. Unless the Modernists plan on balancing out the unrest with positive public happiness buildings\agents then they will be spending more money on the training and upkeep of settlement garrisons.

So you could say it is all swings and roundabouts in the end.
