I just bought an alienware m11x laptop (it's their cheapest contemporary gaming laptop I think), and I installed shogun on it. I didn't know I was playing on ultra settings at first but I was amazed at how realistic and immersive everything was...the most mundane rout became exciting again .
As long as you don't turn anti-aliasing on, it seems that ultra settings is quite reachable!
It affects gameplay so much...you are less prone to overmicromanage, and you can actually appreciate the beauty of your lines being hit with fire arrows from the enemy (no longer is it just sheer frustration).

This week, I got a new video card. I got a GTX550Ti, and I can run the game on high, with a couple of ultra setting on. (All of the check boxes checked) and the game looks absolutely fabulous. I used to need to run the game on low setting, but no more! ;D
The game does indeed look darn fantastic on Ultra, and sometimes just messing with unit sizes can be the difference between unacceptable FPS and acceptable FPS. Since obviously if you are playing on Ultra unit sizes, as awesome as Ultra unit sizes is IMO, then the Ultra graphics settings tax more of your system as it has more soldiers to render per unit and such.
I know my system starts to weep when it has to render 40v40 battles on Ultra, haha.
