Anyone bother with them?
I don't. You start of so far from the actual enemy they easily get into position. They are even too far to launch a couple of volleys. even the Hattori don't get to get any closer.
In older TW games you are almost at the enemy, and with a couple of volleys and a crazy charge, the enemy have no chance.
I only reallty set up an ambush so that I can hide my army. Then I decline the chance to attack, and sneak pass, take the city, then defend it against the newly rebel army.
So, you use them? Had any good battles with them?

I use them to great effect, especially on Legendary difficulty. If you have enough units to complete encircle the enemy then just charge in without really thinking of lines the enemy quickly collapses. Killed about 2200 and only lost 50ish in one ambush.

I never thought of that. I guess it would have the same kind of effect as if a monk had demoralised the army beforehand.
