On an island far away from his homeland in Rome, Captain Sempronius readied his small force as the Carthaginian army advanced upon them. His men all had great experience, but they were outnumbered. His own army had about 400 men, while the Carthaginians had over 850.
It was not long before they could see the Carthaginian armour shining in the sun. Captain Sempronius told his three Triarii units to attack the centre of the Carthaginian line, followed by his two units of Velites and one of Roman Archers. Sempronius' bodyguard and two units of Roman Cavalry hung back.
The two lines crashed. The Triarii fought madly against the Iberian Infantry. Captain Sempronius and his cavalry charged the infantry who were trying to encircle the Triarii from the back. Three units of the Iberians routed, while the Poeni Infantry and the Carthaginian general joined the fray.
The Triarii were almost at the point of routing, even with the assistance of the Velites and Archers, when the cavalry charged a whole side of the Iberians. Several more units routed.
However, the Iberians who had roted before had regained their honour and were charging again. The cavalry went and routed them again. Now the Triarii were on more even terms with the enemy, they were killing several Carthaginian soldiers. After several more cavalry charges into the re-moralized enemy coming back for more, all units routed. Captain Semronius chased them to their watery grave off the edge of the island.
