With Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai just a couple of months away SEGA are beginning to kick-start their promotional campaign. Quick off the block with a new English language preview is IGN, with others like Ausgamer not far behind still writing up their impressions. While reiterating on some basic information the public has known about for a while IGN manage to go in to some deeper information about how some the new gameplay mechanics work.

Of particular note within the preview is:
  • Each season now consists of four turns. So that likely means 16 turns a year.
  • The Geisha and Shinobi (Ninja) Agents make a return.
  • New Agents for the Imperial and Shogunate supporting clans
  • A new foreign Agent called the Foreign Veteran who can improve troop production, improve troop experience gains, and even duel enemy generals on the battlefield apparently.
  • If certain pre-requisites are met Naval Gun Battery barrages can be ordered in from off-map in real-time battles.
  • Diplomacy, trade and recruitment with the French, British and Americans sounds like it works roughly like how trade with the Christians did in Shogun 2.

Read IGN's Fall of the Samurai preview in full over at IGN.

Interesting to note that Eurogamer's preview and IGN's preview contradict each other on how many turns are in a season, and consequently in a year. The IGN preview as stated says four a season, for sixteen turns a year. While the Eurogamer preview says six turns to complete a season, unless winter gets two extra turns, for a total of 24 turns in a year. Either way a single year will be longer turnwise then it ever was in Shogun 2, probably to offset the smaller number of years the conflict took to resolve compared to the Sengoku Jidai.
