Was used time and time again...basic ingredient found in the Art of War. Of course at the time I read of it (age 10) I didn't comprehend why the enemy would be so bloodthirsty as to fall for the bait...but of course now playing Shogun I realise.
From what I read...you can try to do this in Shogun. I play in French for fun, so I thought the "se replier" button was to "withdraw" -- but often it frequently causes units to fall into a rout. (But those units would have routed anyway...I was just trying to save them before I would have lost the entire unit.)
An interesting tactic that would echo the old geniuses of history would be to withdraw units into a rout -- the enemy general or cavalry chases them, and BAM! You rally them and they ambush the prize.
If you have reinforcements handy -- but let's say you have 40 units of ashigaru against 20 samurai. You can rout your units in the thick of battle at say, half strength. The Samurai army chases them. Most of the units will rout in partial order.
As the enemy army breaks up to chase you, you can either rally them (they'll rally at half strength) and fight them off one by one, or enter with reinforcements. Haven't tried this as a tactic yet, but I imagine it would be effective against greedy human players.
