One simple question: what does it do and when? I've played about 30 multiplayer battles so far but I still haven't found any rule as to how it works.

The only regularity to me seems that when I use it my cavalry dies much more quickly, and that when my enemy uses it my cavalry dies much more quickly. Any tips/tricks to help with this? I'm really struggling to get a grip of cavalry battles, today my four yari cavalry lost to one yari and one light cavalry.

I usually win Cavalry battles. I don't know what it does but I always use it. I think normally the charge has more effect, but wedge totally destroyes formations, then that unit is easier to kill.

ok ..the secret with cavarly is to charge from the enemy's flanks or from behind. unless yopur cavalry is heavy you should not let them fight in melee....the moment the first charge has finished retreat and charge again. the wedge formation was created to break enemy formations ( archers, swords) if you use it against spears you will be pulverized as always....and about the battle with the yari cavalry....you definitely did something wrong....you should have crashed them very easily .... yari calarly was created to counter cavalry....so yari cavalry is an anti cavalry unit...you did something wrong

I don't know about that.

Katana Cavalry have way better Melee attack and defense than Yari cavalry, even when you apply their +15 bonus v cavalry. The Yari charge bonus is huge, so if you caught a unit of Katana cav who don't counter charge then you could probably beat them, but I'm not sure.

I generally only use wedge formation when I'm trying to bust straight through a unit and come out on the other side, then wheel and do it again. (this is extremely effective v. stranded sword infantry or bows). If I'm gonna be in a prolonged mix-up, or if I will retreat back the way I came, then I leave it off.

It depends, if their cavalry was upgraded then they may have stodd a chance. Or if one had been blessed with inspiration by the general...

Going off what I said early

Had friendly match with Nicomedeus recently, within which there was a head to head of Yari and Katana cavalry. His Yaris were level 1, my Katanaslevel 0. He charged in with wedge, I in standard.

The Yari's won! The katana's started to pull back towards the end, with their superior melee skills, but the devastation they'd taken from the Yari wedge was too much to recover from. I'd bet the Yaris would have won regardless of wedge and veterancy.

In summary, Yari Cav beats Katana Cav, so think carefully before you shell out the extra 150 for Katana cavalry.

The Yari's had an advantage right from the start because they get a bonus against Cav. So long as you use them primarily to charge infantry (from the rear or flanks) rather than keep them in prolonged combat you'll be okay, and probably find they're far more versatile than the Katana Cavalry. On the other hand the Katana Cav do a better job in melee, unless against cavalry beating units as mentioned.
