I thought I'd do a non-TW AAR and just see how it goes. This is Victoria II, my favourite Gunboats, Imperialism and Being a Bastard simulator. I'm using an 1836 start as the United Kingdom with both expansion packs and no user made mods. I will post images as links because they're too large to have on posts without a scroll bar appearing at the bottom and use a 'history book' narrative

Chapter I: The Formations of Empire 1836-40

http://i.imgur.com/Wa5Ym6i.jpg

In 1836, the foremost power in the world was the United Kingdom. Great power and splendour was theirs. The Royal Navy, unopposed since Trafalgar in 1805, ruled the waves and British traders traded with the entire world. The fires of industry burned and the UK was being established as the Workshop of the World. The Industrial Revolution has yet to sweep away the old order, and this is perhaps the defining characteristic of this era

No other country in 1836 could boast such a strong industrial base, or such a good railway network. The coal and steel industries built the Empire, not guns and ships.

Technological advances were focused on medicine intially to reduce the effects of infectious disease and improve life expectancies.

In 1836, the British Army was typical of a European power, with the majority of the forces arrayed in India, the source of the UK's riches. A substantial force is in Britain and may be deployed around the world. The Navy is immensely powerful, with many ships arrayed in vast fleets.

India, the jewel of the imperial crown. Much of India is governed by local rulers, the so-called 'Princely States' who bent the knee to Britain during expansion in the last hundred years. These princes will fight alongside Britain and trade greatly with the UK.

In 1836, British diplomats and colonial officials began to prepare for war with the Panjabi. This would secure the frontiers of India and remove a possible ally of Britain's enemies in the region. They opt to make the Punjab a puppet state, to full annex the region would be too risky politically.

In the same year, there was much tension in what is now the Pacific Northwest. The fledging US had yet to reach the pacific and was expanding, with borders between British Canada, the US and Mexico uncertain. British settlers reach Washington and British Columbia. In BC, they encounter American colonists. Mexicans and Americans try to make gains in what is now Idaho and Montana.

In 1836, the British Army in India was consolidated in the Armies of Bombay, Delhi and Calcutta. The Princely States maintained large armies.

In September 1836, tensions on the North-West Frontier of India reach a head and war is declared. Panjab is isolated and the UK calls upon Indian allies, all of whom flock to the banner. It seems a very one-sided affair...

Meanwhile, in Canada, Washington is established as a British Protectorate as part of British North America and the USA begins to seriously escalate tensions in British Columbia.

After a siege in Amritsar, where the Punjabi Sikh forces proved no match for the modern British army, despite a numerical advantage, the British press into the mountains, where they will have to dislodge the fierce men of the Hindu Kush.

The British, after several large battles, most of which were one-sided affairs, are able to force the Punjabi to submit as a puppet state of the United Kingdom. Many in the India Office proposed this to reduce the perception of Britain as a war-monger and to create a useful buffer state against the wild tribes of Afghanistan and Central Asia. The war lasted 6 months and almost half the men sent into the mountains died. An inquiry hauls several logisticians over the coals and recommendations are made.

In order to expand the presence of the Royal Navy around the world, dockyards are ordered at Singapore, Ceylon, Calcutta, British West Africa and Port Stanley.

In North America, by mid-1837, the colonial confrontation in British Columbia was sucking in resources and had the potential to escalate into a crisis. British settlers had reached Oregon Territory, and to the borders of Mexico. Many in the British Foreign Office suggested working with Mexico to undermine the US presence in the region, but this never happened.

After leaps and bounds made in Medicine, investment is put into the Royal Navy and how they can improve planning and logistics, vital in the era of the modern world, with an empire and trade routes to protect.

The 4th Reserve Squadron was redeployed from Plymouth to Columbo in May 1838 and renamed the Eastern Squadron. The Squadron is a mix of ships of the line and commerce raiders, although mass naval warfare was not expected by the Admiralty.

Many in the British Colonial Office were exasperated by the behaviour of the Zulu. In August 1838, they began to prepare for an invasion. A pro-British protectorate would be installed, political considerations were less of a concern in Africa than in India or the Americas.

http://i.imgur.com/vMwss69.jpg

27,000 British soldiers were deployed to South Africa to tackle an Impi that could number up to 50,000 Zulu warriors. Although they had strong technological advantages, the Zulu at the time had strong leaders and excelled at irregular warfare.

http://i.imgur.com/PlmEIk1.jpg

In late 1838, the plans were leaked to an Austrian paper and Britain was pilloried as a greedy imperialistic nation, however, the backlash was not as strong as many feared, given the location of the Zulu and their previous behaviour towards Europeans in South Africa.

Colonial resources were freed for the contest in North America. In December 1838 British Guyana was made a Dominion, and resources redistributed to the North.

(mandatory listening for this section: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSjPoUtlkyk)

The British Army invaded Zululand in April 1839. 36,000 men, 9,000 of whom were South Africans, mostly European settlers, invaded and faced an Impi of 35,000 Zulu.

http://i.imgur.com/vO6g44w.jpg

The British advanced cautiously. They took Ladysmith and Durban in August 1839, and after a brutal battle at Ulundi, the Zulu capital, in which the British won a pyrrhic victory after being flanked by skilful Zulu commanders, the Zulu force was routed and the whole of Zululand had fallen. Zululand was incorporated into British South Africa by November.

In North America, the USA colonised British Columbia, but the UK took Oregon. The US attempted to expand into Alberta, but this area is uncolonised by this time.

And, so, the 1840s began. Britain had changed in the last decade. She was now stronger, more industrialised and Queen Victoria sat on the throne, ending ties with Hanover, but strengthening the empire...

Is 8.4 infamy at the start not so bad as in EU3? Because that would be pretty serious at the start of an EU3 game.
