I usually win Cavalry battles. I don't know what it does but I always use it. I think normally the charge has more effect, but wedge totally destroyes formations, then that unit is easier to kill.

I don't know about that.
Katana Cavalry have way better Melee attack and defense than Yari cavalry, even when you apply their +15 bonus v cavalry. The Yari charge bonus is huge, so if you caught a unit of Katana cav who don't counter charge then you could probably beat them, but I'm not sure.
I generally only use wedge formation when I'm trying to bust straight through a unit and come out on the other side, then wheel and do it again. (this is extremely effective v. stranded sword infantry or bows). If I'm gonna be in a prolonged mix-up, or if I will retreat back the way I came, then I leave it off.

It depends, if their cavalry was upgraded then they may have stodd a chance. Or if one had been blessed with inspiration by the general...

Going off what I said early
Had friendly match with Nicomedeus recently, within which there was a head to head of Yari and Katana cavalry. His Yaris were level 1, my Katanaslevel 0. He charged in with wedge, I in standard.
The Yari's won! The katana's started to pull back towards the end, with their superior melee skills, but the devastation they'd taken from the Yari wedge was too much to recover from. I'd bet the Yaris would have won regardless of wedge and veterancy.
In summary, Yari Cav beats Katana Cav, so think carefully before you shell out the extra 150 for Katana cavalry.
